Swedish Medical Center Colleague Spotlight

For more than 100 years, Swedish Medical Center has been a Hampden Avenue landmark. The community of Englewood and the surrounding areas have been turning to Swedish not only for exceptional healthcare, but also for career opportunities. The team culture at Swedish is storied and unique: Many of our colleagues were born at the hospital or have family history of employment. Below, we’d like to share a few of the stories of our amazing colleagues who we have had the privilege to work alongside and care like family.

How long have you worked at Swedish?

10 years going on 11.

What do you love about working at Swedish?

My team here at Swedish feels more like family than coworkers. They all care more about what is best for the patient than anything else.

What inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

I had just begun my studies in Clinical Radiation Sciences and I had a professor who told me that he still got Christmas cards from some of his patients. I wanted to be involved in a field that not only really saved people but that I could use my time to make a difference like he did, even for just one person.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career?

My dad has. He taught me the value of hard work and a humble attitude. No job was ever too small or too large for him. No matter what the job was, he always taught me to do it to the best of my ability and to constantly improve myself. I try to look at each task I do with that mindset and it has helped me improve my patient care and abilities to perform my tasks.

What I want people to know about my current role or department:

The question I get most often is “Do you find that working with cancer patients is depressing?”. I want people to know that it is not depressing at all. I am able to help my patients who are very often going through one of the toughest parts of life they have had to deal with to date. I see them struggle and I am there to struggle with and for them. I see their perseverance and grace in adversity. I see them breakdown and build themselves back up and I feel blessed to play a very small part in helping them build themselves back up. I love my role and my department.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

In the winter, I enjoy skiing and watching movies under my electric blanket, or putting together puzzles with my daughter. In the summer, we like to go 4 wheeling and camping as a family.

If you had an unexpected day off, how would you spend it?

A workout and then Brunch would definitely be happening!! Followed by a massage or a pedicure. Then I'd take my kiddo out to bowling or a trampoline place and read a book.

When you’re in the car by yourself, and no one is looking, what song do you turn up and sing?

I have an obsession with “Mama’s Broken Heart” by Miranda Lambert and will sing that at the top of my lungs, open window and all.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I would love to live in Italy, somewhere on the coast. With frequent vacations to Belize!

What is your go-to Starbucks, Dutch Bros., or coffee cart order?

Mint white chocolate mocha. Venti. With extra espresso.
