Doctors at Presbyterian/St. Luke's seeing more alcohol-related declines in liver health

Doctor: More young adults presenting with alcoholic liver disease

Dr. Tom Heffron being interviewed for the local news team and camera.

Doctors at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center said they anticipate doubling the number of liver transplants they do this year, and with a huge change in the demographics needing the most help.

Dr. Tom Heffron, the director of liver transplant at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s, started performing transplants with the first live donor team at the University of Chicago in 1987. He’s seen a lot of changes over the years, like a decrease in transplants related to hepatitis C with better treatment. However, he’s seen a major increase in alcoholic liver disease playing a factor in transplant cases.
