Volunteering at Presbyterian/St. Luke's and Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children
Volunteers brighten patients’ days and lighten nurses’ workloads.
Our volunteers come from every walk of life. They are teens exploring medical careers, young adults attending medical school, retired nurses, former patients, empty nesters and retirees who just want to give back. P/SL and RMHC offer a variety of rewarding experiences in healthcare. Visit our opportunity directory for a list of assignments for which we are actively recruiting volunteers.
Volunteer application process
Ready to volunteer? Here are a few more things to consider...
Our volunteers are a vital part of our patient care team, so we provide you the training and support needed to feel confident and succeed in your role. Consistency is key to making the most of your volunteer experience. We ask for a minimum commitment of 130 volunteer hours within the year following orientation. Some serve on a weekly basis, while others complete their hours over the summer. Volunteers sign up online for open shifts, typically 3-4 hours in length, at times that best suit their schedule.
Understand the application process
To ensure patient safety, volunteers need to complete the following during the on-boarding process: Submit an adult or teen volunteer application, clear a background check, and provide proof of the following immunizations: COVID, varicella, MMR, Tdap, current TB skin test and Influenza. Please note that only individuals with social security numbers may volunteer.
Completing an online application is the first step to starting the volunteer process.
Hospital assignments and training
Based on preferences indicated during the application process, volunteers will receive placement confirmation of their hospital assignment prior to or at orientation. Training includes:
- Volunteer orientation includes an overview of HealthONE, our hospital and all things volunteers. Occurs in February, May and September on a Tuesday evening from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
- Comfort rounds training for volunteers with patient contact and those who will round on patients during their shift. Occurs Tuesday evening from 5:30-7:30 pm the week following orientation.
- In-service training specific to volunteers serving in more challenging roles such as cuddlers, Kids Connection & Healing Helpers. Occurs two weeks after orientation.
- First shift training alongside seasoned volunteers to help incoming volunteers learn the ropes of a typical 3-4 hour shift. Occurs 2-4 weeks after orientation, depending on your assignment.
Teen Program (ages 15 through high school seniors)
Teens make our hospital a brighter place and are welcome to volunteer in any of our teen-friendly roles. To volunteer, teens must submit a copy of their social security card and have a recommendation letter. Students who are committed to serving on a regular basis and have successfully completed 130 hours may apply for the Teen Leader program. Teen Leaders have additional assignment choices, offer incoming teens additional support, earn hospital scholarship money during their senior year and receive a letter of recommendation to help with the college application process from our CEO, Maureen Tarrant. Teens who submit an application will receive a Teen Program handbook with more details.
