Genetic counseling

Genetic counseling is recommended if you have a family history of cancer. A genetic counselor is a healthcare professional with special training in medical genetics and psychosocial counseling. Our genetic counselors work to evaluate the likelihood that a hereditary cancer condition is responsible for your personal and/or family history of cancer. They can also help predict the likelihood of cancer development.

Our genetic counselors are knowledgeable in all aspects of genetic testing options, results interpretation and screening recommendations. With genetic counseling, our goal is to prevent cancer, or detect it in its earliest stages when it is easier to treat. If you have a family history of cancer, you may have a greater-than-average risk for cancer and may benefit from a genetic evaluation.

The Breast Cancer Care Center within Colorado Breast Care at The Medical Center of Aurora is fully accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.

The doctors at the Breast Cancer Care Center are recognized leaders in treating breast cancer. Additionally, many of our breast specialists are involved with clinical trials. As a result, patients have access to some of the latest and advanced treatments.

• Encouragement for family and friends to attend appointments for additional support

Working together in a multispecialty office allows our physicians to share information, evaluate each patient’s case and offer reassurance and support. Our team includes oncologists, surgeons, radiologists and nurse navigators.

Breast cancer support group

Our breast cancer support group meets the third Thursday of every month from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at Colorado Breast Care. There is no cost to attend the group, which is facilitated by a breast health specialist.

One of the ways in which we diagnose and effectively treat colorectal cancer is through education and encouraging routine preventive care — particularly, through a colonoscopy.

A colonoscopy is a procedure performed by a physician to view the inside of your rectum and colon. Using a scope, your doctor is able to see if you have swollen tissue, polyps (abnormal tissue growths) or cancer. When found early, this type of cancer is easily treatable.

Our diverse team of gastroenterologists, oncologists, hepatologists, radiologists and surgeons specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer.

The treatment process for liver cancer varies. In some cases, you may be able to receive a liver transplant. In other cases, a transplant is not necessary or possible and a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and/or biologic therapy is used.

Additionally, there are new treatments available, in the event you are not a suitable candidate for surgery. Our doctors continue to research certain medications that can help control the growth of tumors and blood cells in the liver.

Our lung cancer program — accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) — uses a team approach for lung cancer care working with you and your family to make the process as smooth as possible, while guiding you through your lung cancer diagnosis, staging and treatment.

Additionally, we offer many types of lung cancer screening options with advanced artificial intelligence technologies to help detect lung cancer early.

Lung cancer screening

We are a designated Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology. Our goal with lung screening is to identify cancer at an early stage. Without screening, lung cancer may not be detected until a person develops symptoms, at which time, the cancer is much harder to treat.

Lung cancer screening is performed using a computed tomography (CT) scan to take a picture of your lungs. CT scans are fast, painless and noninvasive. No medications are given, and no needles are used. You can also eat before the exam. Screening is a continuous effort over time, not a single test. An annual scan is recommended for most individuals who meet screening and risk factor criteria.

Lung cancer risk factors include:

• Being between between 55 and 77 years old.
• If you have smoked at least an average of one pack a day for 30 years. This includes if you still smoke or have quit within the past 15 years.

Robot-assisted bronchoscopy

We are proud to offer minimally invasive robot-assisted bronchoscopy technology. This system allows our physicians to biopsy small, peripheral nodules in the most difficult areas to reach in the lungs with great precision and uninterrupted vision. With this advanced technology, we can detect lung cancers earlier and deliver greater outcomes.
