Jason Sperling, MD, FACS, is board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery and joins HealthONE as the Director of Cardiac Surgery and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Services. He previously practiced at The Valley-Columbia Heart Center in Ridgewood, NJ, a top-performing hospital in the US, where he held an appointment as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University-Presbyterian Hospital. He completed his cardiac surgery training at the University of Virginia, and he participated in cutting-edge research in heart surgery at Harvard University's Children's Hospital in Boston. He has co-authored numerous research papers in well-known peer-reviewed scientific journals. Dr. Sperling is experienced in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, including advanced mitral valve repair, 'off-pump' coronary bypass surgery, multiple arterial grafting and cardiac re-operations. He also is a key member of the Structural Heart Team and a primary operator for trans-catheter valve procedures. Dr. Sperling created the largest thoracic aneurysm and bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) registry in the state of New Jersey, with a wide reach in the region and more than 1,000 patients enrolled. Consequently, aortic (open and endovascular) surgery was a large focus of his practice. A special emphasis in his practice was aortic valve repair (as opposed to replacement) for leaking aortic valves, as well as the 'David' Procedure: a special operation for patients with aortic root aneurysm where the aortic valve is re-implanted as opposed to replaced. He pioneered a new minimally-invasive procedure for atrial fibrillation targeting difficult-to-treat, persistent forms of atrial fibrillation. This collaborative effort with electrophysiology colleagues is performed completely in the EP lab and has restored sinus rhythm in more than 80 percent of patients with AFib previously thought to have no realistic therapeutic options. Dr. Sperling leads the only training sites for the 'Convergent Procedure' in the Western United States region. He has patents granted and pending on devices related to the field of cardiac surgery, one of which comprises a unique approach to minimally-invasive cardiac surgery applicable to a broader range of surgeries than usual. He is also actively involved in research related to a new phenotype of BAV, mechanical properties of aortic aneurysms and novel imaging techniques to predict aortic risk independent of aortic size.
