Weight Loss Surgery Qualifications

Bariatric surgery is an elective procedure for those who continually struggle to lose weight by traditional measures. If other weight loss approaches have failed and you desire long-term weight loss, perhaps bariatric surgery is an option you should consider.

The National Institutes of Health establishes the following guidelines for weight loss surgery:

  • 100 lbs overweight for males/ 80 lbs for females
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher
  • Disabling pain in weight-bearing joints
  • Less than 100 lbs overweight, BMI of 35-40 and have a co-morbid condition such as:
  • High blood pressure
  • Asthma
  • Obesity hypoventilation
  • Diabetes
  • Sleep apnea
  • Digestive disease (GERD)
  • Urinary stress incontinence
  • Depression
