What is a sarcoma?
Sarcoma is the name for cancerous tumors in the body’s connective tissue and is separated into two main groups—bone sarcomas (tumors in the bone) and soft tissue sarcomas (tumors in the muscle, cartilage, nerves, fat, blood vessels and deep skin tissue).
Metastatic bone cancer
Metastatic bone cancer is a type of sarcoma that happens when cancer cells from a primary tumor in another part of the body move to the bone and create a tumor. Our physicians specialize in the management of patients with metastatic bone tumors and will work with the referring oncologist to plan the surgical intervention and provide comprehensive cancer care.
Treatment for sarcomas
Our doctors use the following to treat sarcoma:
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy
- Surgical removal of the tumor
In some cases, the effected limb may need to be amputated, however, our doctors use limb preservation techniques to save as much of the limb as possible.
Limb-saving procedures
Our approach to patient care focuses on “life over limb,” but with successful management of tumors using the appropriate chemotherapy protocols, we offer many limb-sparing surgical options. Some of these innovative techniques have been pioneered by physicians on our team.
Our reconstructive procedures and services include:
- Allograft procedures
- Custom implant designs
- Foam metal technologies
- Growing prosthesis for children
- Soft tissue reconstruction options
Patient resources
We work closely with The Limb Preservation Foundation to support research into treatment for diseases that affect extremities. We also work together to help provide financial assistance for patients undergoing treatment for extremity disease and trauma. You can find additional resources about sarcomas by visiting the website for the Sarcoma Foundation of America.
