Blood cancer occurs when stem cells in bone marrow make uncontrolled, abnormal blood cells. They keep your blood from fighting infections and slows excessive bleeding control. We have many treatments, such as chemo, radiation therapy and stem cell transplants.

Blood cancers we treat

Blood cancer symptoms — easy bruising, excessive bleeding, fatigue and fever — vary depending on the cancer. We diagnose and treat many of these cancers, including:

Diagnosing blood cancers

If you are experiencing blood cancer symptoms, speak to your doctor. They may order laboratory tests such as:

  • Bone marrow biopsy
  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan
  • Complete blood count
  • Fine needle aspiration biopsy
  • Magnetic resonance imaging

Blood and marrow transplants

If you are referred to one of our centers for a blood and marrow or stem cell transplant, a provider and nurse coordinator will meet with you to answer your questions. Your nurse coordinator will help you prepare for each step in the transplant process. If an allogeneic transplant is required, we'll perform additional testing to assist in locating a donor.

Through the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute (CBCI), you have access to the largest full-service blood and marrow and stem cell transplant program in Colorado. Additionally CBCI treats certain autoimmune diseases, and is also home to a comprehensive blood donation center with a large supply of apheresis platelet, plasma and red cell collections. We are able to use these collections for life-saving treatments, including treatments for blood cancers.

Further, our teams participate in a weekly joint tumor board to oversee your individualized care plan, while also expanding your treatment options by providing access to innovative treatments, including clinical trials.

Patient education and resources

Our interdisciplinary oncology team is prepared to help you through the full transplant process, from initial diagnostic testing to designing long-term care plans.
