Patient information and guidance

At Swedish Medical Center, we want you to feel safe and cared for, and that includes having all the information you need to be prepared for your visit.

Depression support groups

We do not have support groups specifically for people with depression, but suggest the following resources:

We do offer free support groups for those who have experienced a pregnancy-related loss or the death of an infant, child or adult.

Food and nutrition services

Food and nutrition services are provided in partnership with Sodexho Health Care Services. Within food and nutrition services, there are three daily support services:

  • Patient dining through room service
  • Visitor and staff dining in the cafe
  • Clinical nutrition, staffed by our registered dietitians

The Food and Nutrition Services team believes that "Patients are at the heart of everything we do." As such, our patient meal program is titled "At Your Request" Room Service Dining. This form of meal placement and delivery allows patients to order and receive meals at any time they choose.

Our hospital provides leading-edge care for patients with many different conditions and diet requirements. Whether the patient requires a diet low in fat or a diet with modified textures, the Food and Nutrition Services team is working constantly to make these modifications as easy as possible for every patient. Our Room Service operators are trained in the specific diets we follow and any nutritional information that pertains to the related disease state.

The most common conditions we treat through nutrition include diabetes, renal disease, stroke, cancer and heart disease. We will accommodate any request as long as it is allowed within the patient's diet restrictions.

Safety protocols

Our hospital has implemented a number of safety procedures and systems to help protect you and your loved ones during your stay with us.

Electrical device restrictions

For your safety and the safety of others, our hospital does not permit electrical devices from home in patient rooms. These devices include

  • Electric blankets
  • Fans
  • Hair dryers
  • Heating pads
  • Portable heaters
  • Radios

Battery-powered appliances are generally permitted unless oxygen is being used within your room. In these instances, such devices may not be permitted. Please check with your nurse if you have a question about what is allowed.

Safety preparedness

The safety of our patients, visitors, staff and physicians is our highest priority. Organizations such as hospitals seem like they should be a safe zone from external threats, but we know that often isn’t the case.

The best protection our leaders, staff and visitors can have is preparation.

The entire hospital team, from leadership and administrative staff to medical personnel and support staff, regularly train along with other local agencies to practice response to potential threats to our safety, including natural disasters, fires, catastrophes and active threats.

As a part of our plan, we work to educate every person working on our campus how to overcome the natural instinct to panic and take actions to increase chance of reaching safety.

We encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with the Department of Homeland Security’s Run. Hide. Fight. protocol.

  • RUN
    • Have an escape route and plan in mind
    • Leave your belongings behind
    • Keep your hands visible
  • HIDE
    • Hide in an area out of the shooter’s view
    • Block entry to your hiding place and lock the doors
    • Silence your cell phone and other devices
  • FIGHT
    • As a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger
    • Attempt to incapacitate the shooter
    • Act with physical aggression and throw items at the active shooter

When law enforcement arrives:

  • Remain calm and follow instructions
  • Put down any items in your hands (i.e., bags, jackets)
  • Raise hands and spread fingers
  • Keep hands visible at all times
  • Avoid quick movements toward officers such as holding on to them for safety
  • Avoid pointing, screaming or yelling
  • Do not stop to ask officers for help or direction when evacuating

We operate a wireless (Wi-Fi) network for our patients and guests. Using your Wi-Fi-enabled device, you can access many internet resources (email, websites, instant messenger, etc.) from just about anywhere in the hospital.
