Your spine affects many of the tasks your body performs, so taking care of your spine is important for your overall health. Rose Medical Center’s Orthopedic & Spine Center is dedicated to providing expert care with specialists in neurological and orthopedic care. Whether you are having chronic back pain or a serious spinal injury, we offer a variety of treatment options including robotic-assisted surgical procedures.

When should I see a spine specialist for back pain?

Sometimes back pain will go away with or without treatment. However, if your pain persists or gets worse, you should see a doctor.

See a spine specialist if you experience any of the following back and/or neck conditions:

  • Numbness or tingling
  • Pain after a fall or injury
  • Severe pain that doesn’t improve with medication and/or rest

If your pain is accompanied by any of the following symptoms you should seek care as soon as possible:

  • Fever
  • Trouble urinating
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Weakness, pain, or numbness in your legs

Why robotic surgery?

If you and your doctor decide surgery is right for you, robotic-assisted spine surgery offers unique benefits. Robotic technology allows surgeons to operate with extreme precision, using smaller incisions. Surgeons have a greater range of motion and can better visualize the patient’s anatomy helping reduce trauma to the surrounding area.

Rose Medical Center offers advanced, minimally invasive robotic-assisted spine surgery that combines a robotic arm and full GPS-like navigation capabilities used during spine surgery. With the help of this robotic technology, our specialists can improve accuracy during the procedure and optimize patient care.[1]

Mark Robinson, MD, neurospine surgeon at Rose Medical Center says, “Robotic technology makes complex spinal surgery safer, faster, and more efficient. This technology allows surgeons to accomplish surgical goals through smaller incisions, less blood loss, and less post-operative pain.”

How does robotic-assisted spine surgery work?[2]

On the day of surgery, your spine care team will take medical images and import them into the robotic platform. These images help your care team determine an individualized surgical plan based on your anatomy and help determine the size and placement of the screws. The robotic arm is then guided by the surgical plan, similar to a GPS pathway. Your spine surgeon uses this pathway to precisely place the screws using instruments. Throughout the procedure, the surgeon views live feedback through the screen that continuously displays the surgical instruments and implants for the care team to monitor.

What are the benefits of robotic-assisted spine surgery?

Robotic-assisted spine surgery can provide patients and spine care specialists with benefits that improve the overall efficiency and experience of spine surgery.

The following are some of the benefits that come with robotic-assisted spine surgery[3]:

  • Minimally invasive
  • A greater level of accuracy
  • Reduces imaging requirements before, during, and after surgery
  • Real-time patient anatomy navigation
  • Reduces radiation exposure
  • Access to real-time navigation feedback through the procedure
  • Improved screw placement accuracy
  • Small incisions
  • Less tissue damage
  • Shorter hospital stays and faster recovery

Rehabilitation to speed your recovery

If you undergo robotic-assisted spine surgery, we will help you get back on your feet as soon as possible and help strengthen your body so you can make a healthy recovery. At Rose Medical Center, we provide physical therapy and rehabilitation after surgery to help you recover.

Virtual and in-person navigation

In addition to our robotic-assisted navigation during your surgery, the Rose Orthopedic & Spine Center provides patients undergoing spine surgery with a dedicated patient navigator. Your navigator will help make sure that you receive the education and information you need before and after surgery, so your focus can remain on your recovery.

The condition of your spine is important for your overall well-being, so don’t delay care. Find out more information if you are struggling with back pain, or call (303) 374-0755 to find a spine doctor at Rose Medical Center.
