Suicide is the leading cause of death in Colorado for individuals 10 to 24 years old and our adolescent suicide rate is nearly double the national average. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I've worked with individuals experiencing suicidal ideation for approximately 10 years. A common misconception about suicide and mental health in general, is that asking for help is a sign of weakness. In fact, it's just the opposite--recognizing and asking for support is an act of courage.

Creating a safe space for individuals to openly share about their suicidal ideation is key. Through an open, honest and non-judgmental dialogue, we can begin to gain the information needed to best support someone during this challenging time.

There are a variety of treatment resources available for individuals experiencing thoughts of ending their life. Through focused treatment, which is most often a combination of therapy and medication management, individuals can regain a sense of hope, purpose and meaningful engagement in their everyday life. A variety of interventions are available, many which provide self-help strategies focused on reducing stress, staying present in the moment, managing emotions, and owning the power of personal change. In addition, building an individualized roadmap with trusted community supports is an essential component of treatment.

The HealthONE Behavioral Health & Wellness Center provides inpatient and outpatient services for individuals with suicidal ideation and self-harm behaviors. If you or someone you know is struggling, there is help available.
