At HCA HealthONE Rose, our volunteers are the heartbeat of our hospital, providing invaluable support and care to both our staff and patients. Today, we shine a spotlight on one of our dedicated volunteers, Sandy Nearpass, who has been making a difference since 2005.

A Journey of Compassion and Contribution

Sandy's journey began at a dinner party, where a chance encounter with a Rose volunteer led her to the hospital. Having retired from a career as a high school counselor, she was seeking meaningful ways to contribute to her community. Her previous volunteer experiences, including being an ombudsman for Denver Regional Council of Governments and running a 9News Health Fair for a senior program, had already instilled in her a sense of service.

Ever since, Sandy has been a valued member of the Rose Family, assisting nurses in the Wolf Building recovery unit. She helps by bringing items for patients, restocking supplies, and managing patient assignments as they come out of the operating room. Her role is crucial in ensuring that both the nurses and patients receive the support they need.

When asked about her favorite part of volunteering, Sandy highlights the sense of teamwork and the impact she makes on both the nurses and patients. "Working as a team member doing something that makes a difference to both the nurses as they work and to the patients’ comfort and support," she says. Having spent her career helping others, she has continued to feel called to serve.

The Joy of Making a Difference

Volunteers at HCA HealthONE Rose add a depth and level of care that enhances the overall patient experience. Sandy believes that hospitals that train and utilize volunteers demonstrate a sensitivity and awareness of the important connections that can be established between patients and caregivers.

One of the most meaningful aspects of Sandy's volunteer work is being able to comfort anxious or sad patients when nurses are occupied with other tasks. She holds the patient's hand, providing reassurance and support during difficult times. These moments of connection are what make her volunteer experience truly special.

To anyone considering becoming a hospital volunteer, Sandy offers this advice: "It is NOT as scary as you think. Lots of people think it is hard to be in a hospital, but I find it is a wonderful team experience and a sense of efficacy not available in other areas." Her words are a testament to the rewarding nature of volunteer work.

Finding Meaning and Respect

Volunteering has also meant a lot to Sandy as she feels respected and appreciated at the hospital. She values the opportunity to learn new things and find meaning in her contributions. Her experience underscores the importance of volunteers in creating a supportive and caring hospital environment.

At HCA HealthONE Rose, we are incredibly grateful for the dedication and compassion of our volunteers like Sandy Nearpass.
