What does a cardiac rehab program include?
Simply put, cardiac therapy is used to strengthen your heart. At HealthONE hospitals, it is also a comprehensive approach to heart health that continues throughout a patient's life. Alongside other specialists, our team of cardiac rehab therapists creates a care plan designed for each participant. It begins with individualized and monitored exercise two to three times per week and then leads to behavioral reinforcement and ongoing support.
Depending on each patient's needs, cardiac rehab may include inpatient and/or outpatient programs.
Inpatient rehab
Inpatient rehab takes place while you are still in the hospital, either after a heart event caused by heart failure or because you have had advanced surgery. During this phase, you will undergo an evaluation and learn about your risk factors. The doctors will work closely with you to develop your treatment plan, and will begin education and exercise to start you on the path to recovery.
Outpatient rehab
Outpatient rehab involves physical and lifestyle elements either after discharge from the hospital or, in some cases, without being admitted to the hospital. It typically involves a deeper level education of lifestyle changes that support your health needs as well as ongoing supervised exercises.
As the program progresses, it includes counseling on how to mitigate your risk of future heart problems. They will also teach you and train you on cardiovascular exercises you can do on your own. This type of therapy may also be used to help treat those who have heart disease.
Who needs cardiac rehab therapy?
These programs are valuable for people who have serious heart or vascular disease. It is especially designed to be significantly helpful for patients who have had treatments that include:
- Angina (chest pain) procedures
- Balloon angioplasty
- Coronary artery bypass surgery
- Coronary stenting
- Heart attack treatment
- Heart failure treatment
- Heart valve surgery
Talk to your doctor if you think you might benefit from cardiac therapy.
What are the benefits of cardiac rehab?
Participating in a cardiac rehab program can lower your risk of death by 53 percent and lower your risk of death from a cardiac-related condition by 57 percent. For this reason, the American Heart Association endorses cardiac rehab. They know this kind of personalized health and exercise program is an opportunity for people to make lifestyle changes. It teaches them to manage medications and risk factors for better heart health.
