HCA HealthONE Swedish Colleague Spotlight
For more than 100 years, HCA HealthONE Swedish has been a Hampden Avenue landmark. The community of Englewood and the surrounding areas have been turning to Swedish not only for exceptional healthcare, but also for career opportunities. The team culture at Swedish is storied and unique: Many of our colleagues were born at the hospital or have family history of employment. Below, we’d like to share a few of the stories of our amazing colleagues who we have had the privilege to work alongside and care like family.
How long have you worked at Swedish?
It will be 2 years this summer!
What do you love about working at Swedish?
I love the chaos and the comradery. There is never a dull moment.
What inspired you to pursue the career you have today?
I have several friends who experienced traumatic accidents. I was fortunate enough to be a part of their rehab process and was inspired by their tenacity. Also, my experiences working with adaptive sports programs and Craig hospital helped push me to pursue a career in OT!
Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
My Mom. Forever she pushed me to be in health care, which I adamantly denied for many years (yes, this is my second career). Finally, I decided she was probably right (Mom’s always are) and I got a job as a CNA before finally committing to grad school. Thanks, Mom!
What I want people to know about my current role or department:
Occupational therapy is NOT here to help you get a job. We are here to support you in regaining your independence so that you can meaningfully OCCUPY your time as you please! It truly is the best job.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
When I am not at work, I enjoy finding a balance between mellow couch time with my cat, tending to my houseplant jungle, wilderness adventures (snow or shine), and late nights dancing Bachata. It’s all about the people I surround myself with, too!
When you’re in the car by yourself, and no one is looking, what song do you turn up and sing?
I love when throwbacks come on the radio — the ones that totally catch me off guard, like Alanis Morrisette, Destiny’s Child, The Flaming Lips — the lyrics come flooding back and there’s no stopping me. Free stoplight concert for the other traffic go-ers!
If money wasn’t a factor, what would you be doing right now?
If money wasn’t a factor, I would just be a happier, wealthier OT! And work way less. 3 x 8’s, anyone?
