Magnet nursing designation

We have achieved Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center in recognition of our nurses' professionalism, teamwork and superiority in patient care. With this credential, we join the global community of Magnet-recognized organizations that have met, and, in some cases, exceeded, rigorous standards for nursing excellence, including an electronic application, written patient care documentation, an on-site visit and a review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.

The foundation of this model comprises various elements deemed essential to delivering exceptional patient care, including the quality of nursing leadership and coordination and collaboration across specialties, as well as processes for measuring and improving the quality and delivery of care.

We are now one of only fourteen Magnet-designated hospitals in Colorado, and one of fewer than 600 hospitals worldwide, that have achieved Magnet status.

What Magnet means for nurses

Magnet designation brings about numerous benefits for our nursing staff, including:

  • Higher employee satisfaction and lower staff turnover, with the average Magnet facility turnover rate being less than 10 percent, the average length of registered nurse (RN) employment being 9.8 years and the average nurse vacancy rate being less than 3%.
  • Highest levels of training and qualifications, with more than half of RN decision-makers holding graduate degrees, being certified by nationally recognized organizations, in addition to nearly one-third being advanced practice nurses.
  • Higher perceived quality of care and higher perceived unit effectiveness.

What Magnet means for patients

Research has shown that Magnet recognition provides many benefits to patients and their respective hospital communities, including:

  • Assurance that the hospital holds top credentials for excellence in nursing
  • Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information
  • Lower risk of 30-day mortality, lower failure to rescue rates, lower rates of falls and improved skin integrity

Pharmacy residency program

Our PGY1 residency program was established in 2002, and is designed to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education to increase confidence and knowledge in clinical pharmacy and medication distribution practices. Residents experience a wide range of clinical specialties, assist with precepting pharmacy students and are encouraged to seek out individual learning opportunities. Residents also have opportunities to participate in a variety of committees and special projects throughout the hospital.
