High-risk pregnancy

A high-risk pregnancy indicates that there is a higher likelihood of a disease or condition that may put you or your baby at risk. This may be because of an existing health condition, a multiple pregnancy or even your age.

At HCA HealthONE Sky Ridge, we offer compassionate care from our experienced care team.

A high-risk pregnancy means you or your baby may require special monitoring throughout your pregnancy as well as during labor and delivery.

Some women have risk factors that qualify their pregnancies as high-risk from the start, while others develop an unexpected complication, causing their normal pregnancy to become high risk.

High-risk pregnancy risk factors

Maternal age

Being over 35 years old (especially if it’s your first pregnancy) puts you in the high-risk category because women past this age are more likely to experience prolonged labor, delivery complications, or require a cesarean delivery. That is why we have a team of experts who can care for you before, during and after your pregnancy.

Medical conditions

Preexisting health conditions place additional risks on any pregnancy. Women who’ve been diagnosed with a chronic illness like kidney disease, lupus, thyroid disease, epilepsy or sickle cell anemia have high-risk pregnancies, as do women who are affected by clinical depression or an anxiety disorder. Other factors include high blood pressure and obesity.  Our antepartum team is here for you every step of the way.

Antepartum care for high-risk moms

The right medical support team is essential when you have an elevated risk of complications during pregnancy. We have assembled a team with expertise and years of experience caring for antepartum patients. It is their passion.

We also know it can be frightening, stressful and lonely when an expecting parent is confined to bed rest and a hospital stay for an extended period. Here is how our navigator can help during your pregnancy

  • Advocate – we are here for you and your baby, or babies. We are easily accessible by phone, text or email – whatever is easiest for you. We can attend your specialist visit with you, answer questions about the plan or hospital, and get more information from your providers if needed. We want to empower you to feel confident in your care and your transition into parenthood, whether it’s your first time having a baby or you are a seasoned parent having a new experience this time around.
  • Education – We can help connect you with reliable, evidence-based information about your diagnosis.
  • Liaison — We consult with your OB, Maternal-Fetal Medicine doctor, and any other specialists and providers so they can provide you with the best care. We also ensure our inpatient team knows your plan so they are prepared when you arrive at the hospital. If you have specific birth wishes, we can discuss them with your team and make a plan that works best for you and your family and is safest for your baby.
  • Coordinate with specialists — We can help schedule consults with neonatologists, pediatric specialists, maternal specialists, and any diagnostics that your doctor orders. We can also coordinate follow-up appointments for you and your baby. We are happy to arrange appointments together on the best day for your schedule and family.
  • Connect with resources – We have various helpful resources for you, including support groups, counseling, national organizations relevant to your diagnosis and other assistance programs.
  • Tours — To ensure you are comfortable with our hospital and know where to go, we provide personalized tours of Labor and Delivery, Mom/Baby and the NICU for our high-risk patients. During these tours, we will review the plan for your delivery and the care of your baby specific to your situation.
